All Hail the King! Monarchs Crowned First Champs!

2009 BSL CUP CHAMPIONSHIP

Montgomery County   3
Capital District           0

BOX SCORE
The first ever BSL Cup Final is in the books and it was quite a shocker. Nobody could have predicted just how this game would end up turning out. The game started on Wednesday, but neither team was able to take any points. Right away that seemed odd since both high powered squads had a fair amount of players present for the weekday tally, but scoreless it was. The first score came Saturday afternoon when Casey Keller got a clean sheet for Montgomery County but remained the sole point from either team with several players fading out. Finally, in one of the mid-Saturday games, Steve Ralston popped in a goal and an assist to propel the Monarchs to a 3-0 lead. It was starting to look ugly for Capital District.
Still, this was the leagues #1 offense so even a 3 point lead is not safe one would think. In the Saturday nightcap, more Gunners players failed to perform and things were getting a little more shocking. However, Montgomery County had plenty of wasted opportunites as well and was keeping the door open for a comeback. The night ended with the score remaining 3-0. Sunday came, with big name players like Angel and Holden still available for Capital District and Landin, Cummings available for Montgomery. The opportunities came and went and the Gunners just could not score. The Monarchs should have gotten an assist from Omar Cummings when a shot hit the post, but the extra point wasn't needed anyway.
In the end the final whistle blew and score remained 3-0. The Monarchs are Champions! After an almost flawless season, the Gunners are denied "the Double" and are shut-out for the first time in club history. The game winner ended up being the Keller clean sheet from Saturday afternoon.

2009 BSL Cup Champions

Congratulations to Montgomery County for winning the 2009 BSL Cup! After qualifying to the playoffs on the last game of the season by just 1 point over the 4th place team, the Monarchs are league champs. David, the team's operator, made the moves worthy of being a champion. While Montgomery County got off to a great start in the season, it was not without a lack of drama. The team went through a spell where it needed several come-from-behind weekends just to earn a tie in the standings. Then in July the club hit a snag that dropped it all the way from first to fourth place. Then a few weeks later the team lost Kenny Cooper from its line-up in an overseas deal, but with some fine adjustments and maybe a little luck, the Monarchs finished the regular season off right and followed that momentum into the playoffs.
The champ will now have plenty of time to think about how to defend his title . The Monarchs did not qualify for the Majors Cup.

The first BSL Cup championship game is a few days away

This is it, the big one, the BSL Cup Final. Who will be the first to win it all?

Leading the way is the league's 2009 Honors Trophy winner, Capital District, with an outstanding season of 47 points (including 15 wins) who are currently on an 11 game unbeaten streak which is tied for the record. The challenger just happens to be the other Bigtime team that holds the unbeaten streak record, Montgomery County, and hopes this is the perfect time to cut down the Gunners.

There is already a bit of history between these two clubs. The last
time these teams met was in the 4th of July in a match of the week showcase. At the time these two were fighting for first place and had only 4 losses combined between them. The game ended in a rather unusual 2-2 tie, far below their offensive averages and far below these teams first match-up in week one when the Gunners won 7-4.

It seems almost poetic that the one opponent these two clubs failed to play atleast three times is the opponent they must face to win the BSL Cup. Both clubs have recently added some firepower in their playoff runs with the new additions to the domestic league. Capital District signed J.Padilla, and Montgomery County signed L.Landon.

Montgomery County's late surge wins the Semi-Final

PLAYOFFS: SEMI-FINAL

Montgomery County   4
Gateway United         2

BOX SCORE
The playoff Semi-Final between Gateway United and Montgomery County got started on Wednesday night when Landon Donovan opened the scoring with a spectacular goal. Then on Thursday night Steve Ralston's assist pulled in the equalizer at 1-1. On Saturday both teams came up empty meaning Sunday was going to be the deciding factor. One of the Saints hero's from the second half of the regular season, Jeff Cunningham, came through again with an assist in Sunday's early game giving Gateway United the lead once again at 2-1. Now it was the Monarch's turn, as one of their regular season hero's, Omar Cummings, came through with not one, but two goals, to give Montgomery County their first lead of the game.
The night cap would be the clincher. The Saints held their hopes on Fredy Ljundberg. If he could score Gateway United would hold the tiebreaker for penalty kicks. Then, in the 58th minute Ljundberg gave a pass to a wide open Zakuani who pushed it over the net. It was an easy opportunity wasted. It would prove to be the end, as only 10 minutes later Montgomery County sealed the deal when Nate Jaqua's goal gave the team some breathing room.
The Monarchs will now advance to face the Capital District Gunners for the BSL Cup. Gateway United will have a week off before regrouping for the Majors Cup. It was a gritty and competitive playoff game for both teams participating.

The Semi-Final starts on Wednesday

The BSL playoffs begin tomorrow! The two teams featured in this years Semi Final game have taken different paths to get here.

Gateway United started the season off rather slow losing several games by a 3-2 score. After nine games the Saints were in 6th place with a 3-5-1 record. Then the team caught fire and compiled a 9-o-1 record in their next 10 games before losing their final match of the season.

Montgomery County began the year off with a frustrating opening day loss before going 7-0-4 in an 11 game stretch. The Monarchs were fighting for the Honors Trophy and then the team hit a tough stretch going 0-3-1 in its next four games. The slump cost the team a chance at first place and almost the playoffs entirely. However, Montgomery's 2-1-1 record to close out the regular season proved to be enough for the team to grap the last playoff spot.

The Monarch's are not the same team since losing their #1 pick, Kenny Cooper overseas, and will need the bottom of the line-up to contribute. Coming into this weekend Gateway United might be without Landon Donovan who has been battling the flu. However, the Saints are undefeated without Donovan in their line-up.

During the regular season Montgomery County won the first match-up 3-2, but lost to Gateway United the other two times, 4-3 and a 7-0 blowout.

GAME 20: Kickers clinch Majors Cup, Monarchs only clinch playoffs

BOXSCORES
The game on everyone's radar between Gaithersburg City and Montgomery County proved to be more than just a foregone conclusion. G-Gity got out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a goal from DeRosario and an assist from Rodgers. The makings of an upset and an open door to the rest of the teams looking to clinch positions was looking great. Then on the last MLS game on Saturday night the Monarchs made some noise with an assist from Juqua and a shut out from Keller ending the game in a 2-2 tie. The result was enough to clinch a Semi-Final playoff spot for Montgomery County, however it gave life for Garden State and Union S.C. to possibly grab the last Majors Cup position.
By the end of Saturday, the match between Garden State and Motor City was in a scoreless tie. It was a result the Kickers could not afford to have as this would not be enough to overtake the Monarchs. The teams last hope came on Sunday with only Chris Rolfe left available and he delivered! Rolfe's game winning goal gave the team a 1-0 win to put Garden State into the Majors Cup group stage.
For a while it looked as if all the doors were opening for Union S.C. All the front-runners that the Blues were chasing were in trouble. However, Union S.C. would still need to win its final game to have a shot. The problem, the teams krytonite over Capital District was no more and the Gunners gave a destructive blow to the Blues hopes winning 3-1. Capital District has tied the league record with an 11 game unbeaten streak.
D.C. Forever did what the team could control as it defeated Gateway United 3-0 but it would not be enough to move the Bandits into the playoffs. The team will have to wait for Majors Cup to have a chance at a trophy. Meanwhile, the Saints loss was the teams first since game 9, ending their unbeaten streak at 10.
So the stage is set. Montgomery County will square off against Gateway United next week in the Semi-Finals with the winner going on to face Capital District for the BSL Cup the following weekend.
The Majors Cup schedule will be released on Monday. Group stage will begin on 9/9 - 9/13.

MATCH PREVIEW #20: Final positions come down to the last game

ATTACHMENT
The regular season finale is here! After 19 weeks of storylines there is still two positions available to be clinched. Both those spots are currently held by Montgomery County. All the Monarchs have to do is win this weekend and the team will be heading to the Semi-Finals and playing in the Majors Cup group stage. Gaithersburg City has the chance to play the ultimate spoiler and give hope to several teams in the league. If G-City can win or tie the match then here is what other scenarios may unfold.
D.C. Forever would then get a chance to go to the playoffs if the team can defeat Gateway United. This should be a great game since the Saints will be trying to tie the record for longest unbeaten streak.
Garden State would be given the chance of going to the Majors Cup if the Monarchs lose or tie. All the Kickers would have to do pending those circumstances is defeat Motor City.
On the outside looking in is Union S.C. The Blues need the most help of all. In order to make the Majors Cup, the team not only needs Montgomery County to lose, but also needs Garden State to lose or tie its game, and still the Blues have to defeat #1 ranked Capital District. The one bright spot is the fact that Union S.C. is the only team to own the Gunners who are 0-2 against the Blues and 14-1-2 against the rest of the league. Capital District also has the opportunity to tie the league record for longest unbeaten streak.

GAME 19: Monarchs stay alive and take lead for playoffs and Majors

BOXSCORES
What a week it was. With their backs against the wall, Montgomery County was in a must-win situation for both the playoffs and qualifying for the Majors Cup. Omar Cummings came through with 3 assists and Steve Ralston added a goal to build the Monarchs a 4-0 lead on Saturday. Then the Kickers showed why they are still in the race for the Majors Cup as well, as a goal by Findley and assist by Ekpo cut the lead in half by the end of the day. Chris Rolfe's goal in the 46th minute on Sunday made it even closer at 4-3, but Montgomery held on for the win.
D.C. Forever was in a battle of its own against the league's leader Capital District. Early on in the game D.C. lost Brad Davis to a red card. However, a Alejandro Moreno goal gave the Bandits a 1-0 lead at the end of Saturday. On Sunday, the Gunners used a Blanco assist and Holden goal to come from behind and win 2-1 and sweep the season series. The loss is a big one for D.C. Forever who was in control of its own destiny. Now the team has fallen to fourth place in the standings and D.C. will need to win next week and have Montgomery County lose to make the playoffs.
Gateway United keeps winning thanks to a 3 goal performance by Conor Casey defeating Gaithersburg City 5-2. Scoring again for the Saints was Jeff Cunningham and Landon Donovan chipped in what should be the goal of the week. Gaithersburg City will have one last chance to avoid finishing in last place.
Union S.C. got a goal from Ching and an assist from Kamara on Sunday to break a scoreless game and win 2-0. The win guarantee's the Blues a winning record but will do nothing to clinch a playoff spot as the team was eliminated from contention. However, the Blues last game of the season does have meaning as the team still has an outside chance at reaching the Majors Cup.
Match Preview #20 will give all the breakdowns of what has to happen to decide the final spots.

Three sub-players with the new Yellow/Red Card rules

Before the regular season ends and some of the leagues teams go dormant, it is now the right time to mention the exciting additions in store for season 2 of the BSL. Hopefully, whether you won or lost, you had fun and will be returning with your option to have a Designated Player or trade it away.

The new rules being added are:
Three substitute players.
This will give more options to the team operator when starters go off on National Team duties. Having 3 sub's is also a key component for the other new rules being introduced to the league next season.
Yellow Card rule.
When a player receives a yellow card it will be documented and tallied (by his name) towards the teams official count. If the BIGTIME teams roster has two yellows in the same game, their opponent will be allowed to count their first sub in the boxscore. Therefore your sub-playerS line-up order has more value since the top placed substitute is the one that gets in the score sheet. If 4 yellow cards are obtained by a roster in the same game, then sub-player #2 will be counted in the boxscore. Like the real game, you are allowed a maximum of 3 subs.
Red Card Rule.
If your player gets a Red Card in the same game, then not only does your opponent get a sub to count (see yellow card rule) but that player is tossed from the game and his points will not be counted if he has any in the boxscore. YOU WILL BE PLAYING A MAN-SHORT.

MATCH PREVIEW #19: Several teams fighting for their playoff lives

ATTACHMENT
How big is the upcoming match between Garden State and Montgomery County? Well, if the Kickers can win and Motor City loses its game, then Garden State would be in the Majors Cup. However, If Montgomery wins, then they take over 4th place in qualifying and control their own destiny in the season finale next week. Meanwhile, the Monarchs must win in order to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Gateway United and Capital District will each try and extend their 9 game unbeaten streaks. These teams may have qualified for everything, but they can still make news. The Saints play Gaithersburg City, while the Gunners play D.C. Forever in a much more important match-up. If the Bandits win, they will clinch the final playoff spot.
Union S.C. needs to win and have both D.C. Forever and Montgomery County lose. If either team wins this weekend, the Blues will be eliminated from playoff contention regardless of the teams result.

GAME 18: Saints clinch playoff Semi-Finals, D.C. clinches Majors Cup

BOXSCORES
It was supposed to be a match between two offensive powers both in playoff position. It ended up being a blowout as Gateway United got 4 goals from Jeff Cunningham and 2 goals plus an assist from David Ferriera to cruise to a 7-0 victory and clinch a place in the Semi-final game of the Bigtime playoffs. Gateway is now unbeaten in 9 games (8-0-1). The Monarchs meanwhile will need to regroup as the team has been pushed back into fourth place with only 2 games remaining and remains 3 points out from Majors Cup as well.
Moving back into 3rd place is D.C. Forever who easily defeated Motor City 5-0. The win also secured a place for the Bandits in the Majors Cup tournament. With 9 wins D.C. holds a very important tiebreaker with Montgomery County for the last playoff spot.
Thirteen is a lucky number for the Gunners, as not only did the team clinch the Honors Trophy with the win, but also a Majors Cup bid. Stuart Holden's goal and assist propelled the Gunners to a 4-1 victory over Garden State. The loss keeps the Kickers at 9 points and in 4th place in Majors Cup qualifying. Can they hold on to the last available position?
Union S.C. fell behind 1-0 before Brian Ching scored 2 goals only a minute apart to give the Blues the lead. Robbie Rodgers late assist tied it up giving each team a point in the standings. Union S.C. holds no tiebreakers of any kind against the top teams in the standings, and will need to win both remaining games and get a lot of help to have any chance of making the playoffs.
