Union SC Has the Right Stuff to Win it All!

2010 BSL CUP CHAMPIONSHIP

BOXSCORE

Union Southern California     7

St. Louis Cure                       1

The 2010 BSL Final was a blowout and once again it was the underdog that came away with the trophy. The match started on a Wednesday with Union S.C. striking quickly off a Chris Wondolowski goal. The game continued on Thursday where the drama began to unfold. In what looked like the play of the game before the match got out of hand, Brek Shea was booted out after receiving a Red Card. The result not only forced the St. Louis Cure to play a man down, but allowed Union S.C. to have Eric Alexander come in off the bench. The result was a goal and assist from the rookie and the Blues had a 3-0 lead. The weekend arrived and the Cure's Salt Lake firepower failed to put up a score in the early afternoon. It was beginning to look bleak for the Cure. Meanwhile, Union S.C. began to really pull away as Steve Zakuani, Conor Casey, and Dwayne DeRosario added in more points The lead had grown to 7-0. St. Louis avoided becoming the 2nd straight Honors Trophy winner to be shutout in the Final when Jimmy Neilsen recorded a clean sheet for the Cure on Sunday. The final score 7-1. Union Southern California is the 2010 BSL Champions! The 2010 Honors Trophy winner is denied "The Double".

2010 BSL Cup Champions

Congratulations to Union SC for winning the 2010 BSL Cup! From the very beginning of the season, the club made it clear that it was going to completely revamp its roster from a year ago. The result was a strong draft. After losing on opening day, the club won 4 in a row and had tripled its offensive output from a year ago. Then, the Blues hit a snag and lost 3 in a row. It turns out this would be the trend for the entire season as the club streaked through up's and down's the rest of the way. By the regular season finale, Union S.C. had amassed a 9-7-4 record, which was good enough for 2nd place in a very tight BSL Standings. The playoff Semi-Final Game saw the Blues narrowly escape by winning the league's first ever overtime game by the meager score of 2-1. The journey was complete with a 7-1 thrashing over St. Louis in the BSL Cup Final.

Final Combatants Used to Fighting

BSL CUP PREVIEW
Wednesday will be here soon enough. That's the day that the 2010 BSL Final will get under way. These two clubs have had their share of drama against one other this season. The clubs first played each other as first and 2nd place foes. After Union S.C. lost, the club fell into a tailspin. The next time these clubs meet was week 13, and although Union S.C. dominated the match, a Robbie Findley dive and PK sent shockwaves to the Blues owner resulting in some not-so-kind comments during week 13. Redemption came in week 19 when Union S.C. amassed a 9-3 win over the Cure.
__________________________________________________________________
ST. LOUIS CURE
The 2010 Honors Trophy winner was on pace to shatter a whole list of league records, but after a 14-1-2 record, the club went 0-3-0 to end the season. The Cure finished the regular season ranked #1 in APG and #1 in MOV, but the numbers fell quite a bit from where they had once peaked.
__________________________________________________________________
UNION SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
The Blues had been playing well and scoring plenty of points until the Semi-Final Game. Another soft performance and lady luck may not be so kind. The Blues scored a record high 9 points the last time the club played St. Louis. However, in the previous two games, the Blues were shut out the first meeting and had only 1 point in the 2nd encounter.
__________________________________________________________________
Season Series: St. Louis lead 2-1-0. Scoring was tied a 10-10 each for those 3 matches.

Union S.C. Advances to Final in Overtime

PLAYOFFS: SEMI-FINAL

BOXSCORE

Union Southern California   2
Burud Town S.C.                 1 (OT)

Thanks to the Philadelphia Union, It was the BSL's Union of Southern California that will be advancing to the BSL Cup Final. The 2010 Playoff Semi-Final Game got off to a very quiet start. The match started on a Wednesday with no scorers for either club. Thursday brough another 0-0 result. Even a rare Friday match saw no offense for either side. Finally on Saturday Burud Town broke through with a goal from last years BSL playoffs hero - Omar Cummings. The lead was short lived as Union S.C. equalized with a Sebastian LeToux goal that was assisted by Justin Mapp who would not count in the scoresheet yet because he was benched by the Blues. The game progressed and the score remained deadlocked 1-1. In the nightcap Donovan Ricketts was holding the game winner until in the 84th minute he lost his clean sheet for the Blues. The result was the first ever overtime in the BSL. Burud Town would have no bench or reserve players with any scores, while Union S.C. had Mapp's assist available as well as Jon Busch's clean sheet in reserves. Mapp's assist would prove to be the game winner in overtime.

Semi Final Game Features Streaky Clubs

_________________________
UNION SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
This is the clubs first playoff game in its second BSL season. The Blues have been streaky all season long. The wins and losses have come in bunches. The club finished 2nd in MOV and APG for the season.
___________________________
BURUD TOWN
This is the inaugural season for the Stags. After a strong first half, the club struggled until winning the last 3 games of the regular season. The strong finish was enough to make the playoffs, but not enough to make it to the Majors Cup. The club finished 3rd in MOV and 4th in APG for the season.
___________________________
Season Series: Union SC lead 2-0-1 and outscored Burud Town 9-6 in those 3 games.

GAME 20: Blues and Stags to Meet in Semi-Final

BOXSCORES
UNION SC 5 NY GREEKS 1
The Blues made easy work of New York to clinch both the clubs first playoffs and Majors Cup. Letoux got the scoring started early and Casey, Arnaud built the lead up to 3-0. Joseph and Zakuani put the game on ice with the score 5-0. Nick Rimando added a point for the Greeks to close out the game.
______________________________
BURUD TOWN 7 MONTGOMERY 5
The Stags overcame a 5-3 deficit to sweep the Monarchs in the season series. The win clinches a playoff berth for Burud Town who finished off the season winning 3 straight games. Omar Cummings took revenge out on his former team scoring 2 goals for the Stags which proved to be the difference in the game. The Monarchs will not repeat as league champs, but will play in the Majors Cup.
__________________________________________________________________
GATEWAY UTD 3 ST. LOUIS 2
The Saints managed to end the season on a high note, but came up short in Majors Cup qualifying as well. Donovan and Mwanga built Gateway United a 2-0 lead before the Cure tied it up with scores from Espindola and Morales. Jeff Cunningham scored the game winner for the Saints. The Cure have lost 3 in a row and failed to break any league records for MOV, APG, WINS, or POINTS in a full season.
___________________________________________________________________
GOLD COAST 2 CAPITAL DISTRICT 0
For a while it looked as if the Suns would be going to the playoffs. With this game wrapped up at 2-0 at the conclusion of Saturday, the game between Montgomery/Burud Town was tied. The result would have given Gold Coast third place. That score did not hold and the Suns will have to settle with a Majors Cup spot. Meanwhile, the Gunners finished off the season very quiet and will have to begin offseason preparations.

MATCH PREVIEW: Game 20

____________________________
BURUD TOWN vs MONTGOMERY
Its not a playoff game, but it might as well be. The loser is eliminated. If the Stags win they are in regardless of what happens in other games. A Monarchs victory is not so cut and dry. The club could get in the playoffs or get edged out by another BSL club that wins this week. Burud Town has dominated this series so far.
_______________________________
GOLD COAST vs CAPITAL DISTRICT
Another big finale where the loser is elimated and winner could make the playoffs. Both these clubs should have on eye on the league scoreboard. Either the Stags or the Blues have to lose for the winner of this game to make the playoffs. Both of the previous games in this series were decided by 1 point. The Gunners won both games.
_________________________
GATEWAY UTD. vs ST. LOUIS
The battle of Missouri continues. The Saints have to win to have a shot at the Majors Cup. A loss or tie and the Saints season is over for 2010. The Cure have lost two games in a row.
______________________
UNION SC vs NY GREEKS
The Blues only need to win to make the playoffs and Majors Cup. No scoreboard watching is needed. In the two previous matches against New York, the Blues scored 7 points each time.
