WEEK 8: Stoners FC Take Over First Place

PENNSYLVANIA 3 GATEWAY UNITED 0 - The Game of the Week was more a case of missed opportunities by the Saints and even a few misses by the winners themselves. Stoners FC got on the scoresheet thanks to 2 goals from Will Bruin and 5 saves from MacMath. On the other side of the pitch, Gateway United had chances up and down its lineup. Landon Donovan alone could have scored 3 times. The biggest moment in this match came when Robbie Keane was given a PK instead of Donovan who normally gets the ball. Not only did this affect the Saints, but Keane then missed the PK himself. The win makes Pennsylvania the last unbeaten club in the BSL and moves the Stoners to first place in the league table. With an 8 game unbeaten streak, the club is 3 away from tieing the league record. BOXSCORE: Stoners- Bruin(G G), MacMath(SP), Castillo(Y). Saints- Beckham(Y).
-
CD GUNNERS 4 ALAMO CITY 2 - Regardless of what trends are going on in the BSL for these rivals, the Gunners find a way to get the upper hand over the Battle. Scoring the clubs best offensive output of the season, the Champions doubled up on Alamo City 4-2 to take the first leg of the BSL Classic Derby. The loss is the second in a row for the Battle and moves the club out of first place. More bad news for Alamo City was the possible injury to Henry, the clubs leading scorer. BOXSCORE: Gunners- Santos(G G), Morales(A Y), Ricketts(CS), Montero(Y). Battle- Henry(G), E.Johnson(G Y), Boyd(Y).
-
SECOND CITY 3 KC QUEST 1 - With each club having lineup failures to start the match this was bound to be a tight affair. But, thanks to a braces from Beckerman and Cascio, the Stars were able to break free and pick up 3 points in this match. BOXSCORE: Stars- Cascio(G A -LF), Beckerman(G A), Nyassi(Y), Joseph(Y), Estrada(Y). Quest- Shea(1T Y -1LF), Pontius(A).
-
UNION SC 5 ALLIANCE 2 - The Blues are now unbeaten in their last 4 matches going 3-0-1 in that stretch after defeating the Lions. After starting the season with several high scoring losses, the club is now moving up the table and making a run for the top 4. Five players contributed to the scoresheet for Union SC. Meanwhile, Alliance did get a clean sheet from resigned Joe Cannon. BOXSCORE: Blues-Arnaud(A), R.Johnson(A), Pickens(CS), Wondolowski(A), Pappa(G Y). Lions- DeRosario(G Y), Cannon(CS).
-
GOLD COAST 4 SPARTANS 3 - After falling behind 2-0 and 3-1 in this match to the Spartans, the Suns offense came alive and made a dramatic comeback. First, Mwanga got an assist even though he played limited minutes, then Cummings got an assist to tie up the score. Jeff Larentowicz's late goal was the game winner to end New York's unbeaten run and hand the Spartans the clubs first ever loss in the BSL. BOXSCORE: Suns- Reis(SP), Mwanga(A), Cummings(A), Larentowitz(G Y). Spartans- Corradi(G A), Gomez(G).

MATCH PREVIEW: Week 8

POWER RANKINGS: Week 7

The Battle lost the clubs first match of the season, but remain on top of the power rankings. It was not a horrible game for the club, but definitely showed it kinks in the armor. Stoners FC jumped to the #2 spot after its 8-0 onslaught in week 7. This is the highest ranking the club has ever been. The Spartans remain strong contenders and Gateway United dropped to 4th in the rankings, but 1 through 4 are very close in strength.

WEEK 7: Stoners Break Match Differential Record

UNION SC 2 GATEWAY UNITED 2 - Chris Wondolowski rescued the Blues again scoring a late goal to earn the club a tie against the Saints. BOXSCORE: Saints- Donovan(G), Nielsen(SP Y). Blues-R.Johnson(A), Wondolowski(G), DeGuzman(Y).
-
SECOND CITY 6 ALAMO CITY 2 - The unbeaten run is over for the Battle as Second City got braces from Oduro and Nyarko to build a commanding 4-0 lead and never looked back. The 2 offensive points is the lowest output of the season for Alamo City's offense as well.  BOXSCORE: Stars- Oduro(G A), Nyarko(G A), Beckerman(G Y), Rimando(SP). Battle- DeLeon(1T), Henry(G), Perez(Y), Boyd(Y), Hassli(Y).
-
SPARTANS 3 KC QUEST 2 - Sean Johnson's saves point was the game winner for New York as the club narrowly defeated fellow expansion side Kansas City to remain unbeaten. The Quest made the match interesting very late as Pontius scored a hat trick in his 2nd match of the week. His 2 point weekly average would be the only offense for KC since Segares' goal was left on the bench as the first sub and New York has only 1 yellow card in the match. BOXSCORE: Spartans- Corradi(G), Grazzini(A), S.Johnson(SP), Juninho(Y). Quest- Pontius(2T Y).
-
GOLD COAST 1 BURUD TOWN 0 - Two struggling clubs with struggling offenses and the result showed it. Omar Cummings goal was the difference in this game. BOXSCORE: Suns-Cummings(G Y), Larentowicz(Y). Stags- Pajoy(Y).
-
ALLIANCE 4 CD GUNNERS 2 - The defending champions continue to stuggle losing for the 4th time this season. The Gunners had only 3 losses all of last season. Meanwhile, the Lions had the clubs best match of the season and have something to build on after this performance. Thanks to the Gunners 2 yellow cards, Moreno was able to add an insurance point off the bench. BOXSCORE: Lions- Neagle(A), T.Moreno(A Y), Ching(G), DeRosario(1T). Gunners- Santos(G), Adu(G), Saborio(Y), Morales(Y).
-
PENNSYLVANIA 8 ROSE CITY 0 - The Stoners came within 1 score of tieing the record for most points scored in a BSL match (Union SC with 9 is the record), but will have to settle with being placed in the record book for have the largest margin of victory in a match beating the former record holders of Gateway United(2009) and Alamo City(2011) who both had matches with 7 point differentials. The win keeps Pennsylvania unbeaten and really makes a statement that this club is a contender for the BSL Cup. Rose City did get a score from Adam Moffat, but it was taken away with a line up failure and could not take advantage of the Stoners red card from Espindola. BOXSCORE: Stoners- Kamara(1T), LeToux(G), Camilo(G), Bruin(G A), Keane(A), MacMath(CS SP), Espiondola(R). Flyers- Moffat(A), A.Moreno(Y), Kimura(Y).

CORRECTION: Spartans/Stoners Fit To Be Tied

The week 6 Game of the Week was bound to end in a tie after all. First, The Spartans 4-3 win was in doubt because the manager placed Juninho in the lineup twice. Since he was placed first as the 8th starter, his goal counted. The drama did not end their. Robbie Keane had an assist taken away and then it was put back. With Keane's assist back in the boxscore, the match is indeed tied again. How fitting that two clubs that had 5 ties combined in week 5 should finally put this match to rest with a tie as well. The standings have been updated.

BIDDING WAR: Chris Rolfe (CHI)

Clubs Involved (6): Gateway United, Pennsylvania, Second City, Alamo City, CD Gunners, Union SC
-
Another bidding war today but with different BSL clubs interested. This one features the return of Rolfe to Chicago. When he played for the Garden State Kickers BSL club in 2009 he was very productive even though the rest of the clubs roster was pretty flat. Will he be a gem in the BSL again? The bidding on him also ends on 4/18, but an hour later 6pm (Pacific time). 2011 and 2012 players stats combined count. All bids placed after deadline will not count.

MATCH PREVIEW: Week 7

POWER RANKINGS: Week 6

The power rankings are almost unchanged from a week ago. The standings leaders continue to out perform the clubs at the bottom. More than any other BSL season in the past, 2012 appears to have a shortage of mid-level clubs. Perhaps free agency and the upcoming transfer window will change matters, but currently the playoff race seems limited to half the league. Majors Cup qualifying should be real interesting when it opens up allowing many clubs new hope. It is still 6 weeks away though. With the exception of Gateway United, most of the clubs that had winning records in 2011 are struggling to find wins now. Why? Are the DP's not carrying their weight? 2 of the 3 expansion clubs possess playoff spots.

POWER RANKINGS: Week 5

Alamo City's victory in Week 5 made the club the obvious choice to stay as #1 in the power rankings. Gateway United remains at #2 because the Saints still scored an impressive 4 points in the defeat. New York's Spartans and Pennsylvania's Stoners will play each other in week 6 and both are currently ranked 3 and 4. Both clubs are unbeaten in 5 matches and have shown potential on given weeks to light up the scoreboard. Union SC got in the win column and jumps up to the 6th spot. Perhaps with the monkey off the clubs back, the wins will start rolling in? The Clubs at the bottom of the rankings are all in need of some retooling. Currently Gold Coast is sitting in last place of the power rankings.

POWER RANKINGS: Week 4

Another 6 on the scoreboard propelled Alamo City to the top spot on the power rankings as well as the league standings. The Battle are now averaging exactly 5 points a game. Gateway United didn't lose in week 4 and has showed stamina without Donovan in another match, but drops to #2 in the rankings. That can all change ofcourse in the game of the week match up for week 5 as the top 2 clubs face off. The Spartans remain at #3, even though the club needs to start finding wins. Ties are good to an extent, but too much can be counter productive as well. Rose City moved further up to #4. Union SC remains at #8. The Blues have a better APG than many BSL clubs, but are sitting in 11th place in the standings. Burud Town remains the only BSL club without a point in the standings.
