Toronto is back again. The Reds have played the 2nd most games in the tournament only behind Capital District. However, most times Toronto has not done well in this tournament, even when the club had Giovinco playing. Toronto takes big advantage of the Canadian Cup in most years to qualify, and maybe 2020 is the year the Reds make the BSL pay for all the times they have represented.
Seattle won the MLS Cup in 2019 (obviously), and is a real threat to win the Majors Cup because they are one of MLS top scoring sides in 2020. Unlike some MLS clubs that have lost their form in recent weeks and months, but used to be very threatening, the Sounders have not lost a step, and are a real threat to win it all. Historically, Seattle has been in 2 Majors Cup Finals as the runner up, and has a history of tearing down BSL opponents.
NYCFC makes it's Majors Cup debut. The Pigeons just lost Heber, so they may be in trouble.
A while back after LAFC won the Supporters Shield I thought to myself those guys are going to win the Majors Cup, and end the MLS drought. I would have put money on it. LAFC was just winning every MLS match scoring at least 3 times, and if you add the assists it was like 8 or 9 points a game. The BSL just could not compete with that. Well, LAFC is in a funk right now, so the tournament favorite is no more.
What happened to Atlanta United? Another club that really looked like MLS' savior for 2020. You might have forgotten they won 2 titles in 2019. They weren't as strong as their 2018 squad, but still scored goals. The five stripes should have been every BSL clubs fear factor for this tournament. Then Josef went down, and well you know the rest.
So who currently looks like the biggest threat to giving MLS another Majors Cup? With current forms, Portland might be the leagues new golden child. The Timbers won the MLS is Back tournament as you all know which is not long ago, and is playing well right now too.
