MATCH PREVIEW #3: Another player grabs the league's attention

ATTACHMENT
The next set of games begin tomorrow! For the third week in a row, Montgomery County is in the "Match of the Week". This time the Monarchs will play in a rematch of the BSL Cup Final against the C.D. Gunners. The pressure is on the Gunners. The club has yet to win a game (0-2) and has never lost 3 in a row in its history. However, their record is a bit misleading. You see Capital District is averaging 3.5 points in its first 2 games and has had the lead in both games as well. The Monarchs in retrospect are averaging 3.0 points in their first 2 games which is also decent, but the teams average fell in week 2 instead of increased and has had two very different looking games. It should be a great match to watch these NECC rivals battle it out.
The next question is can the St.Louis Cure stay undefeated? So far its been a dream start to the season. The Cure lead the league in every statistical category and will now face off against the New York Greeks who tappered a bit last week and are searching for the clubs first win.
Coming off an impressive offensive outting, Burud Town will look to possibly move into 1st place in the standings with another win. Standing in the way is a more humble Gold Coast squad. The Sun's are looking for a break out performance and might need such a performance to challenge the Stags.
Finally, Union S.C. will try and send Gateway United a clear message when these two clubs meet up. The Saints have been the better of this rivalry so far, but the tide may be changing according to the Blue's front office.
In other news around the league, it seems another free agent has grabbed the attention of several BSL operators. Joe Ngwenya was courted by not one but four different BSL teams. Burud Town, Montgomery County, Capital District and Gateway United all sent in request to the commissioner. The winner this time was Burud Town who made the request 2 hours faster than the Monarchs, 5 hours faster than the Gunners, and 6 Hours faster than the Saints.

  1. I guess I shouldn't complain since I would have lost out to all of the above clubs anyway. But, I am really starting to worry about Burud Town. He's beating me to a lot of free agents.

  4. proposal to amend that own goal rule so no points are awarded for that player.

    i would vote yes

  5. same. also wanna propose something that involves giving points for defenders.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Proposal's are fine. But, you have to give a specific and clear idea to the rule you want. Something that can be voted on. These are opinions, not actual idea's to be change to.

IN SHORT.....What are the actual rule idea's you want to be voted on????

  7. A good example is the way Gateway United did it..if you want to check back at that post.

    1. He gave a detailed description of what the new rule was that he wanted.
    2. He explained why it was needed and would help.

And then everyone gave their opinions and we voted on it.

  9. O.K.

I propose to amend the current scoring system for own goals by goalkeepers. Right now, if your goalkeeper were to make a save, then turn around and toss the ball into his own net, that would result in 1 point for your fantasy team via an "assist" (see Bouna Coundoul in MLS Week 3).

I believe that any points gained by a goalkeeper via an own goal that is his responsibility should be nullified. The goalkeeper should not lose points, only NOT gain them for something that penalizes his real life team. In this instance, Coundoul would receive 0 points rather than 1.

I would vote yes on the above proposal, if acceptable.

(Frankly, this seems like it should inherently not be a rule, I don't see it anywhere in the existing rulebook. Coundoul's name is only in parentheses in a box score because he did it, not as some sort of "assist.")

  10. Coundoul was credited with an "ASSIST" on that own goal and the rules state a player who is listed with either a goal or assist or a clean sheet get's a point. What you are proposing is that were discriminate against Keepers. But, in that same week Zach Thornton had an assists for the Gunners but the kind that actually helped his team.

By messing with the ASSIST RULE we already have and saying that Keepers will be treated different you have to realize this will affect all types of goal keeper senario's. DO WE TAKE AWAY GOAL KEEPER GOALS AS WELL... If one should ever happen....(There's only been 1 in the whole history of the MLS so far) My point is are we prepared to nitpicking who's assist or goal is worth a point and who's is not??

  11. I don't think any Keeper is giving up own-goals to help his assist and goals scored average. Its a rare mistake in the first place. I like giving our clubs more opportunities to score, not less. Are we voting on this or just discussing it right now???????????????

  12. As a longtime soccer historian I have never known own goals to count towards a players assist total (in a box score, the player who "scored" the own goal is listed--but that does not mean he gets an official assist or goal). I could be wrong and we could settle this debate if MLS had a website that actually has updated stats, alas that is apparently too much to ask. Fox Sports, on the other hand, does not have any REd Bulls players credited with an assist so far this season. Of course, that is not official.

  13. Gold Coast is right though. It will be years before we see another goalkeeper scoring an own goal. So the whole issue isn't really a big deal.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The Commish decides what, when, and if we vote.

Also not to ignore the Greeks request for defenders scoring points. What can a defender do that would earn a point regularly? I can't think of anything.

  15. While I would love to watch each and every MLS soccer game on t.v. and the internet every week, I just cannot do it. I watch about an average of two of them and go to Galaxy games and see them live.

    What is my point.

Well, when I go online and check out the stats for games I did not see, you have to realize I would have NO IDEA if a goal/assist posted is from a mistake in that game or genuine thing of beauty. So please keep in mind when I see an assist by someone's name, keeper or not, I don't ask myself what kind of assist it is. I just mark it down.

  16. For reference:

    Scoring Summary:

CHV -- own goal (Bouna Coundoul) 47

    CHV -- Jesus Padilla 1 (Zach Thornton 1) 91+

    Misconduct Summary:

NY -- Mike Petke (caution; Reckless Foul) 19 CHV -- Jesus
    Padilla (caution; Tactical Foul) 90

Coundoul's name is in parentheses because he scored the own goal. Not because of some "assist."

"DO WE TAKE AWAY GOAL KEEPER GOALS AS WELL... "

^Of course not. If the point is scored via an own goal disallow it. If not, allow it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Okay lets vote on it.

Any points scored by a Keeper via own goal shall be nullified. Period with no exceptions. 5 yes votes need to pass.

I already know B-Town votes yes.

As usual I will wait until the end to give my vote and will tell you either way.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Gateway United votes No

    ReplyDelete
  19. Gold Coast vote No.

Own goals don't happen often, so when they do it should mean something. Also, the more opportunities to score points the better.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Greeks vote yes on this proposal.

HOWEVER, if it does not pass, I propose this:

Score it the way hockey scores it (or at least how I remember it scoring): an own goal is instead credited to the player that last touched the ball for the team that is helped by the goal.

Using the most recent example: You can see that Jesus Padilla's shot is deflected by Petke, before it hits the post and finally goes in off Coundoul. In this situation, Padilla would be credited with an unassisted goal, since he was the last Chivas player to touch the ball.

I'll introduce my defense proposal after this issue is done.

    ReplyDelete
  21. On top of that, Burud Town is correct. The parenthesis indicate who scored the own goal in this situation, not that he's credited with an assist. Notice Zach Thornton's legitimate assist has a 1 next to it.

  22. Sorry guys, I would've been around sooner but my computer decided it wanted to crash Thursday night.

Gunners votes yes, on the condition that it's expanded and covers that all own goals shouldn't count.

I don't know if this was implied or not consider, but what's the difference between a keeper's own goal and say a forward's? If we're going to exclude one, we should exclude them all together.

    ReplyDelete
  23. So I count 4 yes votes, and 2 no votes. and 2 guys left. Union and Montgomery.

By the way I love the new standings, stats, etc etc on top. BSL site beats out the MLS' (laughs)
