Another Superstar on the Radar

The free agent transfer window has bloggers running amuck about possible stars coming to the U.S.A. to play. The latest rumor has sent BSL owners on a rampage. RSL Owner Dave Checkletts mentioned on a radio show that he believes a Brazilian that everyone knows will be coming to play in Los Angeles. He was no doubt talking about Ronaldinho. Did Checkletts let the cat out of the bag, or has he been dipping in the cool aid as well? As of right now 5 BSL Clubs have expressed interest in Ronaldinho. Sources from A.C. Milan say he still has 1 year left on his contract. So what does Checketts know that A.C. Milan doesn't?

  2. Cancel that for now. Still a rumor as of now.

  3. Its official. Blanco said on his radio show tonight that he is not going to MLS.

  4. where does it say that nery castillo signed with MLS? i cant find it anywhere

  5. I don't know what Gateway used, but I found a couple of Spanish language articles stating that he was signed and going to Chicago.

    ReplyDelete
  6. im saying that spanish language articles are held to a very very low standard, and that if i went by those i could have any player in the world.

  9. Wow. just wow. The speed at which you guys are finding this info out is amazing. I can't even blame East Coast bias on this one. I didn't even know the KC Wizards were going after a DP.

    You guys ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go BSL.

    ReplyDelete
  10. sour grapes, but theres gotta be a fairer way to go after new mls players

    ReplyDelete
  11. not to mention, who did he drop for bravo? doesnt say in the email

    ReplyDelete
  12. LOL, damn Burud ... I actually thought I was late on this one when I was posting it ... you had me man.

And yeah we eat this stuff up !

    ReplyDelete
  13. You can say that again. I really wanted some of these guys for my club. I was up in the middle of the night last night looking for proof of the Chicago DP. I was going to announce it with a major article on my team site and have all of you wake up to it in jealousy. I searched and search and my wife said to me "Can't it wait until the morning?" and I said "Someone will find it in the morning, I just know it. So I have to find out now." I could not find anything, went to bed.. Woke up and there was the email finding what I couldn't. :(

  14. there needs to be some set guidelines about what entails a signing, as in whats a reliable source and such, or some sort of waiver period on new mls signings (maybe like the best statistical player dropped, interesting way of gambling on new players)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Damn! I Totally missed this one. I'm following someone else. This was under my radar. Good god.

What is unfair about the system. Today's action has just been who's the fastest. Very fair.

JUST WAIT UNTIL MY NEXT ANNOUNCEMENT. I AM SO GOING TO GET HIM.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I am open to idea's especially since I can't seem to beat you guys in signing superstars.

Send me a detailed idea that will make it more fair.

But I don't think we should hurt those of you who have THE SPEED TO FIND OUT THIS STUFF.

I believe........A GOOD OWNER SHOULD BE REWARDED FOR THEIR CREATIVITY. I just need to be faster and maybe I can sign one of these guys.

  17. Omar Bravo deal not final according to Robb Heineman on the TV broadcast

    ReplyDelete
  18. I dropped Stephen King. When I do this, I usually email first to see if the guy is available and then immediately follow up with who I want to drop.

While it does have a few flaws, I think the system is better than others. It basically comes down to the Commissioner's discretion. Is he going to take the evidence that's presented or is he going to reject it and want more. Just because I find some random article that says Player A is rumored to becoming to MLS, doesn't mean the Commish is going to let me have the player.

If in the offseason the majority wants to change, we'll try and find a better system.

BTW, about the Spanish articles and their quality. One of those articles that I found was from ESPN Desportes.

    ReplyDelete
  19. yeah the deportes one said it was likely, but in no ways absolutely a done deal.

now if bravo is not final is he up for grabs or is it close enough that it pen to paper doesnt matter

    ReplyDelete
  20. Right now I go based on the following criteria:

    1. (and this is most important) Is it from a real news source. Not a blog, or a fan site, or a rumors site. An actual news source from somewhere on planet Earth :)

    2. Does the information actually say the player is coming to the MLS. A good peice of evidence is an acutal date he is coming, not just in the summer of something vague like that.

    ReplyDelete
  21. MLS owners always have and will continue to say things are not final or signed when approached about signings before they make their official announcements. Heck the RedBulls constantly said that Henry was not signed all the way up to the big day.

I think they have to say that stuff for legal Bull.

If I wait until an MLS official anouncement, you guys will all email me within a minute or two of the press conference and that really would not be fair.

    ReplyDelete
  22. If I may chime in, there has got to be a better way. Deciding what is "official" in MLS is such a gray area. Even Henry wasn't "official" until Thursday. As far as Nery Castillo, that wan't supposed to be "official" until the game tonight, correct? So I was just waiting until then to make a claim (I'm sure we all heard the rumors--but how can you decide which rumor is true and which one is bogus?).

    ReplyDelete
  23. Again I Think the system is fine. Its totally fair. The first guy that finds a real news article spilling the beans about a player signing to an MLS club gets him. 9 times out of 10 that info is accurate. I myself am only looking for someone in the news business to tell me what fan sites know days before.

I ask you guys.... Does it need to be officially official? Its not like we make this stuff up. Why would anyone of us want to pick up someone who is not going to play. Also this way is fun. I enjoy the competition of finding a news article before the rest of you. I get a rise out of it. A victory within the game.

    ReplyDelete
  24. which also brings to question the fact that not everybody can be sitting at a computer 24 hours a day, waiting for that exact moment where an article is released. not saying thats happening, but when does the game go from a fun, weekly exercise where you set your lineup-weekly and make some transactions, to having to be "up in the middle of the night" for fear of being put at a large competitive disadvantage to the rest of the league.

i mean look at NY Greeks, he probably lost interest or whatever, but if hes the most casual of players, if he sees ronaldinho, henry, castillo, blanco, whoever going to every other team, his interest level is going to go from 40% to 20% pretty quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You have a point. They are usually right once a bonified press article say's it. Rumors sites blow smoke all the time, but once someone who is actually paid to report the news reports on a soon to be announcement its beyond a rumor. It may not be official, but its past a rumor. I am not saying a tweak to the system isn't needed. But the issue is not how official the signings have been or are. That appears to be fine with me. They only time I find it unfair is when an East Coast paper prints it and I'm still in bed. Internet news is fair game and you guys have beaten me fair and square. I respect you all for that.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The Greeks are a whole seperate issue. He was either a sore loser or not a real fan of the sport or a million other things. I don't know or care. The longer this league goes on the stronger its players will become. Its simple math. Strong players return. New strong players will join in time until its full of only strong players.

Competitive disadvantage?????? Hasn't happened so far. B-Town, you've signed a few big free agents under this system. I've signed a few with this system. CDG has signed a few. Montgomery has signed a few under this so-called flawed system. Even Gold Coast just signed Mista a few days ago. So what's that 5 teams. The Cure haven't made a big free agent signing, but I doubt anyone of us feel sorry for the Cure. I ask you Kirk, do you feel comepetitively disadvantaged? The poor Commish is the one who should be complaining since he has not signed a big free agent under this system. But otherwise its been pretty diversified so far.

  27. This is just an exciting time in the MLS. An expanded DP rule. The transfer window is open and MLS teams for the first time in their history can sign players without it killing their cap too badly. Its not like this is going to happen again like this. MLS teams aren't going to be signing DP's ever year like this. Trust me.

I don't think it we should look at it as having to stay up at night and stress over it. I have found it exciting. When I check my computer I enjoy seeing what has happened. This morning I smiled when I read Gateway'S article on Castillo. I said to myself, "So he signed Castillo. Good one" I even laughed at the comment about how he went to the right side of st.louis. funny stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have missed out on a few "big" signings. I just don't like the fact that the only reason I was unable to sign a guy was because I couldn't get to my computer or iPhone quick enough (which happened with Bravo today). Sure when I'm in first place it's no big deal, but if I was fighting for a playoff spot, I'm sure I'd be irate. A fantasy game should be about your knowledge of a sport and its players, not who can search the most websites each day. Say player #1 has internet access each day at work so he can surf all he wants while player #2 doesn't have that advantage. And news of a signing breaks out that day; should we penalize #2 over something he has no control over? It's the same thing with the East Coast guys vs. the West Coast.

    ReplyDelete
  29. GC - Glad you liked my post :)

STL - So what is the fix? I do have a computer at work, so if I have an unfair advantage I would like to fix that. Don't want my future championships over you to be tainted in any way :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. That's the hard part--a solution that is fair to everyone. Maybe giving the team who is lowest in the standings first choice? Something along those lines?

GU I'm rooting for you to make a miraculous revovery and get in the playoffs so I can beat you in the final. So I hope you win all DP signings from here on out :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. This is an idea I had the first time the East Coast vs West Coast stuff came up. I never fully thought it out so it's still very rough.

Basically it's a waiver system that would cover new/returning players come in to MLS. Using the standings for the end of the year, each team gets a waiver number. Say you finish dead last you get #1 the following season, and if you finish first you get #8.

Someone finds out a new player is coming to MLS and brings the evidence to the commissioner. The commissioner will either sign off on it or say look for more information. If the commissioner says ok, the commissioner then goes to the owner with the #1 waiver priority and asks do you want this guy.

The owner with the #1 priority can either say yes or no. If he says no, then the player goes to the owner who broke the news. If the team says yes, then he gets the player and then falls to the bottom of the order with everyone else moving up a spot. So #1 becomes #8, #2 becomes #1, etc. There should also be a time limit on long the #1 priority team gets to respond (say 24-48 hours), and if a team is deemed to be inactive than they get taken out of the order.

It still needs a bit of work, but it's an idea.

    ReplyDelete
  32. ^thats just like the mls allocation order, so that fits.

even if the commissioner wanted to expand the current waiver rules to include new mls signings, it would add some strategy. (in terms of the best statistical player dropped).

so say i hear Castillo is coming to MLS. obviously he has the capacity to help my team. normally i would drop my worst player, but with this rule i would be competing in a way with the rest of the league. maybe im not sold on castillo so im only willing to drop the fairly solid eddie gaven.

but say CD Gunners thinks hes gonna light it up, he offers to drop Saborio instead (probly wouldnt happen, but) CD Gunners gets him because Saborio > Gaven. This would mean teams would have to weigh just how badly they want someone. The dropped player would then go to waivers in a domino effect. Would kinda utilize the already in place waiver rule that isnt used often.

    ReplyDelete
  33. IDEA: We do everything the same EXCEPT we have to wait a FULL DAY to see if we get the player.

Example: I find an article about a player coming the the MLS. I email the commish and he say's okay. Now I have to wait a full day to see if anyone else finds that article. If someone else does then WHICHEVER one of us has the worst record gets the player. But its only between the two clubs that actually know about this new player. The rest of the league is out. EVERYTHING IS DONE VIA EMAIL AND IN SILENCE UNTIL WE CAN ANNOUNCE OUR SIGNING.

If no one else knows about the new player in a day he's your also. If like today everyone is emailing their proof, then the worst record gets him.

IF THE WORST RECORD TEAM DOES GET THAT PLAYER HE MOVES TO THE BACK OF THE LINE AND AS FAR AS FREE AGENCY IS CONCERNED IS NOW THE BEST RECORD IN THE LEAGUE RANKED #1. THE REAL BEST TEAM IS ACTUALLY RANKED #2 THEN IN FUTURE FREE AGENCY OPPORTUNTIES.

This solves time zone issues. I solves when you go to your computer issues. But it still allows those of owners who search for players the opportunity to pick up their fair share because not everyone is announced like the Chicago Fire did. Some are like KC where they come out of no where.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Burud is along the same thought process as I am.

The only reason I am against a straight "allocation order for incoming talent" is because it directly takes away half of what this is about. Finding out who can manage the best. Simply lining up and rotating front to back takes away from that. And at what line do you draw for that ? Is it EVERY incoming player during the season ? Just those in the "transfer windows" ?

I like the waiver order for players that get dropped because it mimes the actual systems in pro sports.

As a compromise I'd suggest this:

First 3 clubs to find "actual" news of a player signing go into the "giving up the best player" system. The Commish posts on the site who the three clubs are, and then the owners email him (to keep their potential releases private). Commish does the math and the club that gave up the most value gets the guy.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I like BTown's idea. Expanded the waiver rule. "Better statisical player released" tiebreaker.

Gold Coast is right that a full day should pass.

So here is the best solution.

*******Email the commish your request and proof WITH who you are willing to release for this new player. (That's important)

Even if you are the only one who knows about this new player..... the gamble is..... do you feel lucky enough to just drop a reserve guy.... or are you going to offer to release a better player just in case you think someone will know about him as well.

If you release someone very good and no one else emailed the commish, you gambled wrong because you release too much and could have gotten away with releasing less value.

Also now that newly released player is on the current waiver rule where the league clubs have 24 hours to make a bid for this player. So the so called losing bids still have the opportunity to get someone to help their club.

In my opinion forget about rewarding last place teams just because of their record alone. I'm almost in last place and don't want charity. Its my problem to get back on top. I'm not looking for a handout.

    ReplyDelete
  36. That would work and sounds like fun.

Gambling on who you want or have to release :)

This way you guys can still comb the web for signings and be rewarded. But in times when everyone is on the prowl, there is a fair and strategic tiebreaker. Brilliant!

    ReplyDelete
  37. ok good good. how does the commish offer his waiver player?

    ReplyDelete
  38. umm guys... I like the idea. Good thinking.

And you are right it would work perfectly and add more strategy to the game. Love it!!!

One issue that would need to be addressed..... "ME".

Once someone emails an article about a player they want... I then automatically find out about this player too. I also know about who they are releasing and how to beat their statisical player. So how do I get in the mix?

BUT IT IS A GREAT IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. To aleveate the whole issue, we shouldn't be "signing and releasing" all at once.

Whomever makes the claim in whatever time period all are "in" on the player. However, don't send in a player to be released. Make an announcement on who is "in" on the player and then have them send in the players to be released. If you're in on it though Commish, simply email your choice of player to release to a team not involved before asking the other involved teams to do so.

Once you've sent in your player, announce to the other involved owners who to email thei released players to.

Math is done, announcement made by impartial third party.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Effective 7/18/10.... Bidding Wars Rule. (see rules)

    ReplyDelete
  41. I actually think the league should vote between these two:

    TYPE A: (Commish's rule)
    - All teams who "discover" within a day are involved.
    - Bidding can be done multiple times, and isn't hidden/secretive.
    - Commish may be involved as long as there are multiple teams.
    - Best statistical player released is the winning team.
    - Waiver period starts on new player for all teams. ("trickle down effect"

TYPE B: (More like Montgomery's rule)
    - Still 24 hour time period, but only first 3 teams are involved.
    - Trust is put in commissioner (maybe he must look on web for signings before checking his email)
    - After three teams involved are declared, bids are sent to a neutral third party league member.
    - Each team gets only one bid, you overbid/gamble, too bad.
    - Bids are one time, secret bids.
    - Best statistical player released is the winning team.
    - Waiver period starts on new player for all teams. ("trickle down effect")

    ReplyDelete
  42. I can see why Type A was chosen. With only 3 teams being allowed to be involved in "type B" it really affects the commish's team. Basically, he would be the third club everytime because he would know of the scenario. And then there could be disagreements on who the neutral third party is. Type A avoids those issues and solves the commish team issue the best. I say give it a try. Nothing wrong with seeing who clubs are bidding. The secret is usually out of the bag anyway once it would get to bidding anyways and more than likely a good player will ave to be relased if multiple clubs want him.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I vote type A. I think its about a fair as it can get given what we have discussed. Mostly takes what we already talked about and fixes the commish club issue.
