Where do we start with all the storylines in the first round of the Majors Cup. Let's begin with the longest match in BSL history. Angel Town and Toronto put on full display what the Majors Cup is all about. The Reds really took advantage of the BSL scoring system with 2 SOG's from Laryea, who finished the day with a total of 4 points himself. Meanwhile, Angel Town got just what the club needed from newly signed Anton Tinnerholm who scored a brace in his Stars debut. Then, more good luck was the match postponement of SKC/COL which forced the Stars to start Shuttleworth instead of the usual starting GK Tim Melia. The forced moved proved lucky, as Shuttleworth scored a brace.
NYCFC got the tournament started, and thrashed the Cardinals putting up 8 scores. The RedBulls also showed MLS came to play by leading the week with 10 points to slice up the Saints. Even LAFC, who did not play a good match managed to do just enough to defeat the BSL Champions, and the Sounders made easy work of the Spartans in their match.
So did any BSL teams do well? The Century Elevens got a hat trick from Daniel Royer, and eliminated the Impact 7-5. Gold Coast FC had no trouble at all against Atlanta winning easily 7-0 in the most lopsided result of the round. Finally, the MLS pregame favorite Portland Timbers were no match for the Western Wolves who knocked them out 5-3.
