GAME 6: Capital District Outguns Blues, Cure's 8 Ties Points Record

BOXSCORES
What an exciting group of games we had this week. We start with the "Game of the Week" and as predicted in the Match Previews, this one was going ot have some offensive pop. The game began when Capital District got a couple of goals from Joseph Padilla, while Union S.C. combated with a Sasha Kljestan assist. Alan Gordon made the most of his starting position with a nice header to give the Gunners a 3-1 lead at the conclusion of Wednesday's action. Anyone who thought that this would be the bulk of the scoring hasn't been following these teams carefully. Union S.C. wasted no time fighting back with a pair of DeRosario assists. Then in what seems to be Blues tradition, O'Brien White had a goal and assist in the first Substition position if he could get in the game. With the score tied 3-3, Donovan Ricketts added another reason why he should be an MVP candidate, when he recorded his 2nd clean sheet of this week to give him a very deserved 180 minute shut-out average and 1 point in the boxscore. Union S.C. first lead in the game was short lived as Saborio equalized with a goal. There was still no cards from the Gunners, and it looked like O'Brien White was not going to get his chance to enter the game. Capital District took advantage and the lead back, when Ryan Johnson scored a goal. Later he would add 2 assist while Union S.C. got a goal from Wondolowski. The win brings the Gunners unbeated streak to 4 games and ends the Union S.C. winning streak at 4.
The St. Louis Cure got a real scare this week against Burud Town. The Stags came to play and showed some moxy against the BSL's undefeated club. Coming into this one, it was not going to be easy with Edson Buddle given 2 games to make some goals. Well, on Wednesday, it was Burud Town that came out of the day with a 1-0 lead and Buddle and company had nothing for St. Louis. The only mistake on the part of the Stags was a Red Card from Perovic. It's never wise to give a club that averages 5 points a game an extra player on the field. The match continued on Saturday and the Red Card fears came true as Chad Barrett subbed in to scored 2 goals right away and gave the Cure the lead. Edson Buddle found a point in his second game to give him a 1 point average and the Cure a 3-1 lead. Burud Town began its push back. Gaven scored, Cristman scored to tie it up 3-3. Then Brad Davis scored a few, Brian Mullan scored very quickly in their nightcap and Burud Town had the lead. A man down, and the Stags were showing up the Cure. It was amazing. The headlines were about to start printing. But wait! You just can't count out the Cure until the final minute of stoppage time is done. First in the very late and final minutes of the Crew game, Robbie Rogers hit a goal. Then scores starting coming in from Bobby Convey. one assist, then another, then a third assist. It was almost like St. Louis got a wake up call and then decided to pour it on. When the final whistle did finally blow, it was St. Louis that ended up tieing the record for most point in a game with 8. The Cure remain undefeated even after a valiant fight from Burud Town.
So what about the match between last years playoff rivals. Gateway United took the lead off a Landon Donovan assist on Wednesday. Then on Saturday, Donovan erupted for a goal and 3 more assist to give him a weekly average of 3 points. At the same time Julian deGuzman scored an assist and the Saints built a 4-0 lead on the Champs. As the day moved on the Monarchs offense produced very little to show they would be able to mount any sort of comeback. The only spark was David Ferreira who helped Montgomery County avoid a shut out, but it came at the expense of a Jeff Cunningham goal. Gateway United would end up winning this one easily 5-1 and picked up a very healthy 3 points in the standings.
After playing well but losing last week to St. Louis, the Suns came out and took a commanding lead very early against New York when Justin Braun scored 3 times and Dax McCarty added another. Then on Sunday Kyle Beckerman's goal swapped points with Nick Rimando's clean sheet for the Greeks. New York was unable to score any points from its field players and the game ended with Gold Coast improving its record to 3-3-0 on the season.

  1. Forgot to mention the 13 points STL/BT combined to score is a new record as well. Previous was 12 points done several times.

  2. Damn if only Shea would have gotten into the game I'd have broken that record. I'm proud of being in the record book but I hate having to share it with Gateway!
