League Introduces the Retention Player

When the BSL began, the league decided to copy the MLS and institute Designated Players (AKA the Beckham Rule) allowing BSL club owners the opportunity to keep 2 players from last years rosters and also like the MLS a BSL club could obtain a 3rd DP with some sort of addition cost. (Instead of money paid out it came in the form of a future BSL draft pick).

Now, with the MLS coming out with a Retention Funds Program (AKA the Zusi Rule) allowing Sporting KC to pay and keep Graham Zusi outside the salary cap, but not make him a DP, it was time for the BSL to follow suit in a similar twist.

At the conclusion of the season, BSL clubs can take advantage of the new Retention Player Rule.

BSL owners may also keep 1 "transacted" player from last years current roster that was un-drafted in the BSL that season. The TRANSACTIONS tab on the league website will hold all additions/subtractions until a new season is started allowing owners to see their previous free agent signings. The retention player rule is a BSL clubs reward for strong player acquisitions after the initial draft. A minimum of 8 weeks (1/3 of the season) on your roster is required to protect this player before the new draft begins.

With this new rule BSL clubs are now allowed to keep a maximum of 4 players from their old roster if requirements are met.

  2. Un-drafted by you. Cannot be a player you traded for during the season. Cannot be a player that was not available during the league draft.
