Majors Cup Qualifying Will Have New Format

Since its inception in 2009 the Majors Cup was instituted for two purposes. It is a tournament to showcase how a full MLS roster would compete against BSL clubs using the league's scoring system and the other foremost reason is to give all BSL clubs "hope" even when a playoff race is lost in the midst of a challenging year. For six year's the 2nd half of the BSL season served as a fresh start for the clubs at the bottom of the table. However, the current format was still flawed adding too much value to the last 11 weeks and still putting club owners in a position for early elimination from the qualifiers (sometimes as early as week 15). The league announced today its new Majors Cup Qualifiers format. BSL clubs will be ranked 1-12 from the previous season's final standings into two groups of 6 clubs each. Each BSL club will play a total of 5 head to head matches (1 match against each group opponent) with the top 2 clubs in each group winning qualification for the postseason tournament. The matches will be scheduled in weeks 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 of the BSL season allowing time for roster adjustments/trades for struggling clubs to find a fix and salvage their season. Because these matches will be sharing dates with the regular season matches, the 5 MCQ matches ONLY will use a different scoring system. Players in all positions will have their "SOG's" (shots on goal) count in the boxscore (not their goal/assists). Goal Keepers will remain the same.

  2. First - I LOVE THE RED CARD REDO !!!!! THANK YOU

Second - Not so keen on the scoring method for the MCQ match ups. You could literally outscore your opponent but lose ... or lose to a club that gets shut out. I think maybe adding every SOG to the MCQ scoreline would be a more viable way to go.

Third - LOVE that penalties will be given to those that leave, tank, or whatever.

    1. Yeah BSL 2.0 ha ha. This will totally add to rivalies when you have to go head to head in a key qualifying match outside the regular season table.

  5. I know it appears I'm the only one but I really dislike how the allocation budget has worked out. Previously, If I didn't want two DPs I could sell a slot on the open market. Now, why would you every buy one that way when you can just grab it from the league and not have to help any of your opponents in the process? I mean, spreading the cash around to everyone else is nice but $5 won't make any real difference.

Most of the other rule changes are good or at least interesting. The Red Card thing never really made sense and, even though I did have that three week streak mid-season last year I support penalties for inactive owners. I do agree with AC though about the MCQ scoring. Seems not quite right just yet. Cool idea for fixing overall qualifying though.

    1. Maybe I don't understand. If I didn't want to keep 2 DP's I could offer my slot for a draft pick (which might be more interesting than spending $55 bucks). And if I really wanted to get rid of a slot i could post that I am selling my slot at a discount price. Say give me $40 bucks and its yours. There are plenty of options still. Actually, the budget increases our options. For example, you want to make a trade by one player is slightly better and holding up the trade. Now you can add cash to level the deal. Just my 2 cents.

    2. I suppose if we enter into the world of selling slots on the cheap then that makes a bit more sense. I also follow on the add-on cash in trades. My question to you is this:

If you could get a DP slot from me for $40 but know that I now have $40 more in allocation would you rather that than put an extra $15 into the bank where no one can use it to outbid you potentially later?

My other issue I've covered before where teams that are constructed with a lot of solid guys but no stars are at a disadvantage currently vs teams that have a guy that's leading the Golden Boot race in terms of knowing to who name Captain on any given week. Maybe not as huge an issue as I'm thinking it is but there's my thinking.
