Preview: Week 9

Some Clubs Find Certain Opponents More Difficult
There will be several match-up's coming up where the all-time series have been a bit lopsided. Gold Coast may be riding high with a 6-1-1 record at the moment and could use that momentum entering its match against Capital District were the Suns have won only twice in 12 meetings. More lopsided is the all-time series between Union SC and Alamo City, where the Southlanders have won only once in 15 meetings. Also this week a couple of 1-6-1 clubs face-off with the Saints having won 5 of 7 over the Flyers historically.  Also on tap Cumberland will look to continue its fine form against the resurgent Spartans and the match of the week will showcase the 4th place Stars against the 6th place Mounties.

Gold Coast rounds out the 2-0-0 sides after defeating Alamo City 7-3 in its qualifier. The most competitive match of the weekend was the qualifier between Capital District and Second City. Recap: Week 7

Stars Push Themselves Into Playoff Zone
Kei Kamara and Federico Higuain traded braces for their clubs in the match between the Gunners and Saints, but it was the red card by Olave that changed the complexion of the game allowing Capital District's Maidana to enter as a substitute and score the game winner. The victory is the Gunners 70th regular season win all-time. Meanwhile, the defending BSL Champions had the clubs best match of the season taking down what was the last unbeaten side in the league quite easily. The Spartans got scores from 5 different players and spread the points around with great balance to take down Union SC and send the club back to 2nd place. Up in Sac Town, Gold Coast kept the pressure on the standings leader with the clubs 5th win on the year thanks to having six players put up numbers against the Zodiac. Second City won a slugfest against Burud Town getting a brace from Bunbury and Blas Perez to move into the playoff zone. It is the Stars 40th regular season win all-time as well. Cumberland Athletic didn't look great, but played well enough to grab a win over Rose City and reclaim first place in the league. Finally, Alamo City got the goals the club has been waiting for and looked like the Battle of old in a win over SC Canada.

Recap: Week 6

Southlanders Unbeaten After Six Matches; Take Over First Place
The substitutes came up big in several BSL matches this weekend. Lets start with the first leg of the Empire Cup. The biggest moment of the match came when the Gunners Adam Jahn was red carded. Normally losing a man has a negative effect on a club but, the dismissal allowed the Spartans to have Jermaine Jones enter the match. Jones did not score, but his yellow card allowed the Gunners Noguiera to enter the match and he scored the equalizer to salvage a tie for his club.  Across the coast, Union SC broke a 2-2 tie with SC Canada when Dillon Serna was subbed into the match to score the game winner for the Southlanders. Juninho would add some insurance, but the damage was done by Serna. The win pushed Union SC into first place in the BSL for the first time since week 15 of 2009. Meanwhile, Gold Coast FC handed Cumberland Athletic its first defeat ever thanks to a Gabriel Torres brace. The result moved the Wildmarys down to 2nd place, and the Suns up to 3rd place. Also this week, Orange County moved into the playoff zone of 5th place after defeating the struggling Battle. This match was another game that had a sub score off the bench. The Zodiac's third scorer was Ricardo Clark off the bench. Second City got back in the win column defeating Gateway United 3-2, and Rose City got the club first win of the season defeating Burud Town 5-0.

Both New York State sides are struggling, but a win this weekend could change the fortunes dramatically for one of these clubs. Another notable match-up pins first place Cumberland Athletic against 4th place Gold Coast FC. With 4 of the current 5 playoff seeded clubs playing each other this week, it opens the door for the rest of the leagues clubs to make headway onto the potential losers of these matches.
