Preview: BSL Playoffs Final

There will be a new champion of the BSL once again as two first time BSL Finals participants will go head to head. (Eight years and no club has won the BSL Cup twice, although some have come close.)

The 2016 Honors Trophy Champions, Gateway United, will look for "a double" as the club is in the big game for the first time in its 8 year history having never advanced past the Semi-Finals on several occasions.

Cumberland Athletic Club as improved upon last years great inaugural season by advancing further in the playoffs than in 2015 and is now only one win away from the clubs first trophy.

Competitively, these two clubs have met only 4 times so far and have split the 4 matches with 2 wins each since 2015.

The two sides finished 1st and 2nd respectfully in the season standings and also finished 1st and 2nd in PPG for the season, meaning oddsmakers are expecting a great match.

Will it beat the all-time highest scoring BSL Cup Final of 14 total points? Three clubs have scored 7 times in a Final as well. Can either score 8? We will just have to wait and see.

  1. Cumberland expects to be fairly healthy for this match. Robbie Keane appears to be on international duty recovery, and will be a game day decision.

  2. 3:1 is the score at the end of Wednesday games (Rowe earned 5 saves).

  4. Ugh. I would totally be killing it, if my team had made it to this weekend.

  6. Sunday games starting... lots of players to play: GU has 4 to play, two of which have already contributed points from earlier in the week (Baptista and Boateng). So, they'd have to contribute more than a single point each to make a difference in the score. CAC has 5 to play (including substitute Rob Vincent). One of CAC's has already contributed a point (Rowe), so he'd have to do more to contribute to the score. Also, CAC's Robbie Keane is a game time decision on playing, which is a huge opportunity or loss depending on how it goes. GU's point sitting with substitute Rowe (NER) would only come into play if CAC found 3 more yellow cards. There is good reason to think this could go down to the wire!

  7. GU's Rowe's point comes into play, also, if we end up in a draw at the end of regulation. I would need the extremely unlikely event of Villarreal both playing and scoring for it to go to PKs.
